NEWBORN PREP GUIDE

When it comes to your newborn photos, preparation is key to making sure everything goes smoothly! A sleepy, full baby is the secret to getting those beautiful, peaceful shots, and that’s why it’s so important to follow the prep steps as best as you can before the session. Doing this will really help create the best experience for both you and your little one.

Let’s walk through the simple, step-by-step guide to get your baby ready, plus some helpful tips on what to bring and what to expect during the session. Trust me, a little preparation goes a long way in capturing those precious moments!

Your Packing List:

  • Pacifier

  • Diapers and wipes

  • 3-5 receiving blankets

  • Extra pair of pajamas

  • Extra bottles if baby is bottle fed

  • Snacks and water for you

Step One:

Wake your baby early.

Try to keep baby up for 2 hours before you leave the house to come to your session.

Step Two:

Give your baby a bath.

Use either a tub or sponge. This will help to keep your baby awake, especially if they are sleepy.

Step Three:

Apply lotion to your baby.

This also helps to keep baby awake and to smooth their dry skin. Do this for a good amount of time!

Step Four:

Dress your baby in a onesie.

Do not use any undershirts or clothing with waistbands. This will prevent any marks on baby’s skin from tight clothing. If it is cool out, just layer baby up with extra blankets

Step Six:

Double check your packing list.

Pacifier? Check! Extra bottles for feedings? Check!

Step Five:

Feed your baby right before you load into the car.

Try to keep baby awake so that they have a big feed.

Here’s the lowdown!

When you arrive at the studio, I’ll take baby and settle them into a series of solo, baby-led poses. You’re invited to make yourself comfortable in our family waiting area until we pull you in for photos!

We will bring in family and siblings i, and capture a variety of combinations. Plan for about an hour of photos together. If you have young children, it’s at this point that we ask dad, or another caregiver, to take the sibling(s) out for a bite to eat or to head home. After family photos, baby can feed and get sleepy again for the next portion of their solo session.

Outfit Guide

We suggest solid and simple clothing. Avoid any distracting patterns, logos or graphics. Keep colours in neutral and complimentary tones. I have a steamer in the studio if you need to de-wrinkle any items!

I’ve put together a variety of outfit options that you can use as inspiration while planning outfits for yourself and your family.

Safety First, Safety Always.

We take your baby’s safety very seriously. Our poses are carefully selected with your baby in mind. Please let us know if there were any complications during birth, or any conditions we should be aware of prior to posing your baby. Not all babies enjoy every position, however a sleeping baby is the easiest for achieving newborn poses. We will do our best to soothe your baby into sleepy poses, however your final images will be reflective of your baby’s tempermant during the session. We may sound like a broken record here, but following the Getting Ready Step-By-Step Guide is so important for achieving a settled, sleeping baby during your session.
